The Purpose of Reflection
Self-Critique
Reflection is an important practice for students to grow and improve from a learning experience. In this course, it is also called a "Self-Critique".
Reflection
Reflection is a process where one can describe the learning achieved, process the change, and relate it to future learning.
According to the article, “The Pedagogical Balancing Act: Teaching Reflection in Higher Education”, the two purposes of reflection are:
- Reflection allows students to make sense of material/experience in relation to oneself, others, and the conditions that shaped the material/experience;
- Reimagine material/experience for future personal or social benefit (p. 147).
Benefits of Reflection
- Enhances meaning
- Encourges insight and self-awareness
- Involves a higher level of thinking
- Creates a link between current learning experiences to previous learnings.
- Improves decision making
- Involves a higher level of thinking
- Increases confidence
- Provides distance between you and your designs
"As an artist—whether your work is commercial or personal—you probably spend a large portion of your time working alone. This comes with a big disadvantage: you are intimately connected to the work. You know how it started, how it developed, what you kept and what you discarded. The audience, however, sees only the final piece. Does your intention come through? One of the hardest tasks in the creative field is to distance yourself enough from your work to be able to judge it objectively."
