What is a hydrogen-powered car?

A hydrogen vehicle is an alternative fuel vehicle that uses pairs of hydrogen molecules as its primary energy source for propulsion.

How does the car work?

WHERE IS HYDROGEN EXTRACTED FROM?

Water electrolysis:

Materials needed for the reaction: -Battery -Electrodes (Anode and Cathode) -Water -Wires

How to refuel a Hydrogen car

Autonomy of hydrogen cars compared to petrol and electric vehicles

Hydrogen cars have a range similar to petrol cars, from 400 to 500 km per tank.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

These types of cars are zero-emission because they only emit water vapour from the exhaust pipe.

Hydrogen cars to buy in spain

There are two brands that market hydrogen cars in Spain. Two Asian brands: -Toyota (Japan) -Hyundai (South Korea)

TOYOTA MIRAI (72.000€)

HYUNDAI NEXO (72.250€)

LIMITATIONS

  • Lack of Infrastructure: One of the major challenges for hydrogen cars is the limited availability of hydrogen refueling stations, which can make it difficult for costumers to adopt this technology.

Why is it better to buy a hydrogen car than an electric car?

An electric vehicle is powered by electricity stored in a battery and recharged by connecting to the electricity grid. A hydrogen vehicle produces its own electricity through a chemical reaction in its fuel cell. The batteries of electric cars have a limited life and produce a lot of pollution and the metals they are made of (lithium) will one day run out.

CONCLUSION

Buying a hydrogen car is a good idea because it doesn't pollute, it can travel long distances without stopping much, and refuelling is quick. Also, in some places, the government gives you grants to buy one. But you have to remember that there are not that many places where you can fill up with hydrogen, and sometimes these cars can be a bit expensive at first.
