Level 5 Unit 10 Lesson 6
Do you think aliens have already visited Earth? Why might they come here?
Vocabulary
alien: a living being from another planet.
The alien wanted to learn about humans, not hurt us.
We collected data from our readings of the atmosphere and learned the red planet is made only of gases.
data: facts and numbers used to measure information and change.
After delivering his lunch, Jerry's dad exited through the classroom window.
to exit: to move out of a place or position.
headset: a device worn on one's head, usually used to communicate by speaking and listening.
Online gaming is difficult without a headset.
Vern's mission was to measure how deep the cave was.
mission: an important journey.
light years: a measure of distance for space travel: how far light travels in one year.
It would take 1.87 light years, traveling at the speed of light, to travel out of our solar system.
The tour ended when the ship returned to port.
to return: to go back to a place.
farther: a comparative adverb used to compare distances.
It is farther to Phoenix than to Dallas from here.

Has anyone from your country been in space? What was their mission?
Reading
Captain Lewis and his crew had the ringed planet in their sight. They would launch the shuttle from here."We've transmitted readings of the atmosphere, Captain. You'll need your spacesuits, as there is no oxygen present on the surface of X974," said astronaut, Murphy."Let's put those suits on, then, Roberts. We've just entered X974's orbit.
Space Explorers
Lewis and Roberts boarded the module and landed on X974. They were careful to avoid the large rocks that covered the planet's surface.
The astronauts set out to explore the planet."Consider, we are the first humans to stand on this planet, sir!" Roberts said over the headset. Lewis could tell his colleague was excited."We are, Roberts. So let's not forget to bring our test materials, so we can discover everything possible," replied the captain.
Several hours into the mission, the astronauts were collecting samples when an odd ship floated towards them.
Nervously, the waited for the ship to land while they considered the danger. This was an alien ship, a species humans had not studied. Would they be peaceful?Captain Lewis put down the samples he was carrying and took out a white flag. When an alien being exited the ship he said, "We come in peace," and waved the white flag.
