  • A single hair is called a hair shaft.
  • It is made up of:
  • the cuticle
  • the cortex
  • the medulla.
  • Epidermis:
outer layer of the skin - its thin & acts as protection
  • Dermis:
lies beneath the epidermis - is the thickest layer of the skin - the fibres & elastic tissue gives strength & flexibility
  • Subcutaneous layer: Fatty layer -
provides insulation for your body also a cushion and protection for your vital organs
  • Blood Capillary Vessel: Network loop
Carries nutrients & oxygen and is found in the dermis
  • Nerve Fibre: Sends pulses or messages to the nerve ends
  • Nerve Endings: Responds to pain, pressure, heat & touch
  • Sweat Gland:
Releases water & waste on to the epidermis : helps to cool the body
  • Hair Root: Growing area of the hair
  • Hair Follicle :
found in the demis & its the pocket in which the hair grows
  • Hair Shaft:
is found above the skin or on the scalp
  • Sebaceous Gland: opens into the hair follicle to secrete a natural oily or waxy matter called SEBUM - this lubricates the hair & skin
  • Arrector Pili Muscle:
attached to the hair follicle, it contracts when cold or frightened makes hair stand up - goosebumps
  • Hair Bulb: is created by the blood nourishing cells to form keratin
  • Dermal Papilla:
nourishes the base of the hair follicle sends signals of hair growth to the uppermost layer of thr dermis
