THE WHY: EMPATHY INTERVIEWS

"Empathy Interviews are brief conversations that connect us to the authentic experiences of children, families, communities and stakeholders related to equity and inequity. Although we want to hear about people’s experiences of inequity, their positive experiences are equally valuable as we consider what we want to foster and build." (national equity project)

Why empathy interviews?

our mindset

We believe empathy interviews are a value-add to our ideas, ventures, and journiess. We keep it human-centered, listen, stay curious, center the interviewee, trust the process, notice non-verbal cues, lean into silence, and are prepared and precise. We lean into the national equity project's process of liberatory design as we consider best practices for empathy interviews.

Liberatory Design emerged from the addition of two steps to the design thinking process: Notice and Reflect. These modes help us to pause and interrupt the dominant cultural habits that contribute to inequity. Notice and Reflect are at the heart of Liberatory Design and integral to every step within the process.
