Arcaico
First Puerto Rican civilization
They didn't use canoas. They recolected fruit and were nomads. They lived in caves. They were hunters
Arahucos
They came from the coast of Venezuela from the Orinoco River
They practiced agriculture. They used the canoa.
Arahuacos
They were the first to use burenes.
They had a special person called the Bohique.
They used to cook casabe.
They did works in ceramic.
They practiced the agricultura de roza.
Pre Taíno
They had a siple social organnization. They created the cemis. They moved to live in the mountain. They would do agriculture in monticulos.
They were also hunters and fishermen. Their main food was yuca.
Taínos
Last cultural complex in Puerto Rico.
They practice poligamy.
Taíno
They farmed in conucos.
They practiced the areito.
They lived in yucayeques.
They had a more complex social structure.
On top of society you had the cacique, then nitainos, Bohique and Naborias.
Definitions
Agricultura de roza: They would work the land and burn the tress in order to farm. Cajoba: hallucinogenic drug used by the bohique to contact the gods. Buren: plate made of ceramic or rock to cook casabe, Casabe: Yuca bread
Cemi: three-pointed object made of stone, shell or wood that was used in rituals. Monticulos: small mounds used to farm. Yucaqyeque: Taíno for village. Bohique: healer, priest who had mystical powers to predict the future.
Cacique: The leader of the yucayeque. Nitainos: privilage class of the Taíno society. In charge of administaring justice and distribnute the work. Naborias: People of less social standing. Conucos: mounds of dirt that were used to cultivate yuca.
Poligamy: To have more than one wife. Areito: Ritual ceremony that was done to celebrate multiple ocassions.
