Victimization theories

Victimization theories

Structural Choice Model - Proximity and exposure to cime may increase or decrease a peron's likelihood of becoming a victim.

Victim Precipitation - An event or an action in a person's life that results in them becoming a victim.

Lifestyle Exposure Theory - A person's lifestyle may increase or decrease their likelihood of becoming a victim.

Proximity of Crime - Physical proximity to high-crime areas may increase or decrease a peron's likelihood of becoming a victim.

Routine Activity Theory - Stresses the importance of three key factors; gurdians, motivated offenders, and availability of suitable targets. A person's everyday patterns can increase or decrease their likelihood of becoming a victim.

Exposure to Crime - One's vulnerability to crime. Whether someone can resist/repel an attack.

Madison Brooks, 19, was a Louisiana State University student who was raped by 4 men and then later that same night was fatally hit by a car. Madison had been drinking heavily that night and asked the 4 men for a ride home; they proceeded to rape her in the back of their car. They dropped her off at 3 a.m. in an East Baton Rouge subdivision where she drunkenly stumbled onto the road and was hit. I think that drunk Madison was a very "easy" target for the 4 men that raped her in terms of victim attractiveness. They most likely thought she wouldn't remember it the next day. Madison was alone and drunk which made her vulnerable. Of course, I am not blaming it on Madison, however wandering alone at night especially when drunk exposes you to people who might want to use you in the wrong ways.

Victimization theories

Target Attractiveness - Reasons why a particular target is chosen.

Capable Guardianship - Ability to repel a crime attack. For example the size of a household or having neighborhood watch.
