INSTRUMENTS AND THEIR CLASSIFICATION
The traditional classification of instruments is based on the study of the instruments of the orchestra. It establishes a division of three big families: string, wind and percussion.
Winds
Woodwind
Bowed Strings
Aerophones
Strings
Brass
Plucked Strings
Cordophones
Struck Strings
Definite Pitched
Percussion
Idiophones Membranophones
Indefinite Pitched
Percussion
There are different types of percussion instruments. We can group them in percussions instruments with definite pitch (they produce sounds with specific pitch, notes which you can write on the staff) and percussion instruments with indefinite pitch (they have non-specific pitch, so you can’t put the notes they produce on the staff).

In addition, they can also be classified into idiophones (Those that produce sound through the vibration of their entire body) and Membranophones (Those instruments that produce sound through the vibration of a membrane or leather.)
WoodWinds
A woodwind instrument is a musical instrument which produces sound when the player blows air against an edge of a hole or a thin piece of wood called a reed. Most of these instruments were originally made of wood, but some, such as the saxophone and some flutes, are now made of other materials like metals or plastics. Woodwind types:
- Single-reed instruments use just one reed. When air is forced between the reed and the mouthpiece, the reed vibrates, creating the sound. Clarinet and saxophone.
- Double-reed instruments use two small pieces of cane joined together. The air vibrates between the two pieces of cane. Oboe, English horn and bassoon.
- Embouchure hole: the sound is produced when the air hits the edge of the embouchure hole. Flute, piccolo and recorder.
Brass Instruments
Brass instruments are made of metal. The tube is made of a metal alloy, and it is folded or coiled around themselves to make them more functional. The pitch of the sound depends on the air pressure the musician produces on the mouthpiece and a system of valves and pistons. Horn, trumpet, flugelhorn trombone and tuba.
