Project Skills: Week 5 – Writing an effective introduction to your blog

In this session:

The introduction needs to be ‘catchy’, ‘thought provoking’ – it needs to encourage the reader to what to read more Use research and make sure this is cited correctly People need to know that what you are saying is based on actual research – it motivates them to ready more of your blog Keep it short - 100-200 words! Too big research topics – narrow the focus through e.g. gender, location, age, cost etc.

How to:

Introductions set up your argument and tells the reader what to expect. The main goals of an introduction are to: Catch your reader’s attention. Give background on your topic. Present your thesis statement—the central point of your essay. Your introduction should give the reader a sense of the kinds of information you will use to make that argument and the general organisation of the paragraphs that will follow. After reading your introduction, your readers should not have any major surprises in store when they read the main body of your work.

Session Tasks:

You should begin to write your blog introduction using the guidence from your tutor. Show your work to someone else in the group for peer feedback. Rework your introduction taking into account what we have discussed in today's session.
