A OMS define a restência anti-microbiana como uma restência do microorganismo ao medicamento anti-microbiano que antes servia para tratar a infecção desse microorganismo.

Aumento da disponibilidade global ao longo do tempo desde a década de 1950.
Venda descontrolada em muitos países de renda baixa ou média, onde podem ser obtidos sem receita médica, o que pode resultar em uso de antibióticos quando não há necessidade.

O aumento da resistência bacteriana esta relacionado com o volume de antibióticos prescrito, e com o facto de não se seguir exactamente as instruções da prescrição ( não seguir o tratamento até o final)
Prevenção
- Usar antibioticos apenas quando é prescrito por um médico

- Nunca compartilhar antibióticos com outros ou usar prescrições antigas

As bactérias KPC, superbactérias ou bactérias super-resistentes a antibióticos são um fenómeno recente, observado em pacientes que viajaram ao sul da Ásia para fazerem cirurgias plásticas.
