Famous Cuban Folk Song: Guantanamera

Rough Translation: I am a truthful man from this land of palm trees. Before dying I want to share these poems of my soul.

Guantanamera was originally written in 1929 as a patriotic song about Cuba. The tune has evolved through the years and used in struggles for peace and justice across Latin America and the U.S. It has been recorded by a remarkably long and diverse list of artists, including Joan Baez, the Fugees, Jimmy Buffett, Jose Feliciano, Julio Iglesias, Pete Seeger, and numerous others.

Empanadas

Empanadas are hand-sized savory pies that can be found all over South America. Every country and area has its own variation of the dish. All follow the same basic culinary guideline — a soft pocket of dough that’s stuffed with a scrumptious, savory filling.
