OCEAN POLLUTION
How can i help?
What causes ocean pollution?
Eighty percent of pollution to the marine environment comes from the land. One of the biggest sources is called nonpoint source pollution, which occurs as a result of runoff. Nonpoint source pollution includes many small sources, like septic tanks, cars, trucks, and boats, plus larger sources, such as farms, ranches, and forest areas. In addition, companies and factories dumped thousands of liters of harmful chemicals into the ocean every day.
What is ocean pollution?
Ocean pollution is a mixture of both chemical contamination and trash. The act of ocean pollution ocurrs when chemical and trash are either washed, blown or intecionally dumped into the ocean.
How much pollution is in the ocean?
One recent study estimates that the world’s oceans are polluted by roughly 171 trillion plastic particles that, if gathered, would weigh roughly 2.3 million tons. These microplastics (tiny plastic particles .2 inches or smaller) find their way into marine ecosystems and our water.
