THE cRETACEOUS PERIOD

Eshal SUBHANI

start

The Cretaceous Period lasted around 80 million years! It is widely known as the longest geological period. The Cretaceous period was one of the three divisions of the Mesozoic Era, making it an epoch.

KPG Extinction Event

Also known as the Cretaceous - Paleogene Event

The KPG event marked the end for the cretaceous period paving the way for the Palogene period in the Cenozoic era. It is hypothesised by scientists to have been caused by a combination of factors, including an asteroid impact and massive volcanic eruptions. The KPG was estimated to have eliminated 75% of all species on Earth this includes non - avian dinosaurs, marine life, terrestrial plants, and other animal groups.

Some of the surviving animals were:

  • Lepidosaurs
  • Amphibians
  • Few species of birds
  • Mammals

Life during the cretaceous period:

Dinosaurs were not the only forms of life during this time. The rapid evolution of flowering plants, otherwise known as angiosperms are one of the most significant events in this period. These plants produced flowers and seeds, leading to the spread of more complex ecosystems and providing new food sources for animals. In this period, the first modern day snakes and birds appeared evolving from small theropod dinosaurs and lizard - like ancestors. There were also swarms of marine reptiles who much resemble some of the animals we have today. For example the Ichthyosaurs much resembled dolphins and whales due to its enormous size and fish - like bodies.
