Preparing your Oral
All you need to know
Selecting a Field of Inquiry
Culture, Identity and Community Beliefs, Values and Education Politics, Power and Justice Art, Creativity and the Imagination Science, Technology and the Environment
Or the 7 concepts of IB
Characteristics of a Global Issue:
- significance on a wide/large scale
- be transnational
- demonstrate impact in everyday/local context
Make a claim
You need to make intelligent, specific claims about how texts present such global issues. The challenge here is to move skilfully between the global issue and the specifics of a text and its cultural context.
Let's assess some examples
Identity and perception by peers and society in The Great Gatsby and The Wind up Bird Chronicle.
'Identity' and 'perception by peers and society' are large, somewhat generalised topics and don't inherently connect. Improved version:
The way in which personal identity can be affected by peer perception.
Let's assess some examples
How society's contrived gender roles restrict women's actions and livelihood in Hedda Gabler and Emily Dickinson's poetry.
'There is also quite a lot going on here, and the statement is clumsily phrased. How about:
The way in which attitudes towards gender can restrict women's sense of status.
Let's assess some examples
How cultures determine the worth of men based on their financial contributions to their families - with reference to Metamorphosis and A Raisin in the Sun.
'The issue here might well be that the student has chosen a topic that is very particular to the two texts, and find it hard to relate to other 'transnational' or real world contexts.
The relationship between money and masculine identity.
Let's assess some examples
Injustice.
Fairly obviously, nominating a global issue in the form of a single word is unlikely to yield good results. The candidate needs to aim for more specificity or the possibility of a direction.
The importance of the imagination as a way to combat injustice.
some good examples
Education as a means of empowerment ...The impact of political oppression on the individual's struggle for creative freedom... The psychological effects of grief ... The representation of Violence... Sexuality as a force of repression and liberation...

Extract
Duration: 2 min. You will analyse at least 2 ways in which authorial choices communicate the GI, your interpretation and evaluation of each one in the whole work.
Whole Work/ Body of work
Duration: 30 seconds. State your final evaluation of the authorial choices and how effectively they communicate the GI.
Conclusion
Listen to some of the good examples from your own classmates in previous orals.
