9/11 Salt Lake city Olympics

Paris Olympics Games

Professional athletes were allowed to perform

Refugee team was created

  • International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894 by Pierre de Coubertin in Paris.
  • It was based on Coubertin's idea that was reflected in the Olympic creed.

International Olympic Comitte

Its functions are:

  • supervise, support and monitor the organization of the Games
  • make sure they run smoothly
  • ensure that the rules of the Olympic Charter are respected.

What were the first Olympics Games?
  • The first Olympics took place in 776 B.C. in Olympia, Greece where people went to worship their gods. They were held every 4 years.
  • It was quite different from the games we have today: the athletes performed in the nude and they fought to the death.
  • It was all done in honor of the Pagans gods.
  • Running, long jump, shot put, javelin, boxing, pankration and equestrian events were some of the things carried out in the games.

First Modern Olympic Games

  • In 1896, the first modern olympic games took place in the pan athletic stadium in Athens, Greece.
  • As we have seen, the revival of the olympics were thanks to Coubertin that proposed the idea on 1984.
  • The games weren't held in honer to pagans gods anymore, instead they wanted to contribute to building a peaceful and better world.
  • Participants were all European, or living in Europe, with the exception of the US team.

9/11 Salt lake city Games

  • Six months after the 9/11 attacks in NY, the salt lake city Olympics signified a resilient nation that could overcome fear and safely gather together again.
  • In honor to those who died in the attacks, the flag that flew over the World Trade Center on the 9/11 was held by members of the US Olympic team.

Professonial athletes in the games

IOC didn't allow athletes to play and it was not until 1986 that professional athletes were allowed to perform.

Why were them allowed?

he IOC realized that they could turn the Olympics into a bottomless goldmine with the presence of the most famous athletes in the world, who were professional.

Tommie Smith and John Carlos
  • In 1968, during the Mexico olympics, Tommie Smith and John Carlos protested against racial violence.
  • This led to their suspension from the US team. They said the supended them because: “the games are Sport not Politics”.
  • They returned to the US as controversial figures, but also heroes of the civil rights movement.

OLYMPIC CREED

  • The Olympics were extinct until the 19th century, when the French Pierre de Coubertin, who believed in sportsmanship and hard work, created “the Olympic Creed”.
  • He had the idea of creating a competition that commemorates the Ancient Olympic Games and was the key piece for their revival.

US VS SOVIET UNION

  • In 1980, during the Cold War, the US and Soviet Union hockey teams faced off during the medal round of the men's hockey tournament.
  • This game was so important because USA was in desperate need of a source of patriotism that would bring the country together.
  • The US achivied it by wining the dramatic match with a result of 4-3, it was played in Lake Placid, New York.

Olympics in Nazi Berlin

In 1936, the Olympics were held in Berlin, which was nazi Germany at the time. Hitler wanted to use the games to perpetuate his ideas of superior race. This backfired a little bit when Jesse Owens, a black American athlete won 4 gold medals. All Hitler could do in response was refuse to shake his hands as if he organised the games, he couldn´t kill anybody.

John Taylor wining a gold medal
  • John Taylor was the first black athlete to win the gold medal in the London games.
  • In the first and final round, Taylor received a lead from Cartmell and passed another to Sheppard making his team win both races.
  • The final times were 3:27.2 and 3:29.4.
Women and black athletes in Olympics
  • In 1900, women and black athletes were allowed to participate.
  • Despite the initial negativity of the founders, who believed that women/blacks should not participate, they participated for the first time in the Olympic Games held in Paris.
  • This meant a great advance for women and boosted a feminist movement.
  • Hélène de Pourtalès was the first woman to win a gold medal in this year.
The creation of the Paralympics
  • In the 1960s the paralympics were created for athletes with disabilities.
  • The first took place from 18 to 25 September 1960 in Rome.

Refugee team

  • In 2016, a refugee team was created for those athletes who are refugees.
  • This Team competed for the first time at the Rio 2016 games, inspiring the world with strength.
Olympics Rings

In 1912, Coubertin designed the olympic rings. Each ring symbolizes a continent and the colors were chosen because at that time every flag in the world had at least one color. This was giving a message of world unity and demostrates how athletes from all over the world come together for the Olympic Games.

Jim Thorpe and his gold medals

Jim Thorpe was an American athlete who won numerous medals at the 1912 Stockholm games. But after the games, they had to be stripped of all his medals because he played professional baseball. The IOC claimed that he had violated the rules that existed around the games at the time, which stated that no professional athletes could participate.

The end of Ancient Olympics Games

  • In 393 AD, Greece was under the control of Emperor Theodosius I, who was a Christian ruler.
  • This meant that Greece could no longer pay homage to the pagan gods.
  • For this reason, he banned all pagan practices, including the Olympics, which were no longer celebrated.
Olympics in Japan
  • In 1964, 20 years after World War II, olympics were held in Japan and this marked Japan’s emergence from the war as not an enemy but a peaceful country.
  • It was a reacceptance to the world community and the end of a break period.

Paris Olympic Games in 2024

  • The Paris 2024 Olympic Games last from July 26 to August 11. They will be held at the "Stade de France" in Paris.
  • A total of 32 sports will be carried out, among which there will be a newcomer: breaking. Breaking/breakdance is a style of urban dance that I had never participated in until these games.
