Fundation

Founded in 1636 by the Massachusetts State Assembly, and soon after named in honor of John Harvard, its first benefactor, the university is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Although never formally affiliated with any religious denomination, the early college provided teaching primarily to Congregationalist and Unitarian clergy. Its curriculum and student body were gradually secularized throughout the 18th century, and by the 19th century, Harvard had emerged as the central cultural establishment among Boston's elites.
