Why Do We Sleep?

The primary reason humans sleep is to facilitate essential physical and mental processes, including tissue repair, immune system support, memory consolidation, and overall well-being. Sleep is a fundamental biological need that allows the body and brain to recover and function optimally, ensuring physical health and cognitive performance.

Sleep Cycles

A typical sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes.

Sleep cycles consists of three different phases called the N1, N2, and N3 phases.

Sleep cycles are recurring patterns of brain activity and physiological changes that occur during sleep.

Dreaming

During REM sleep, our brains are highly active, while our bodies experience muscle paralysis to prevent us from physically acting out our dreams. It is during REM sleep that the most vivid and memorable dreams occur. This stage is characterized by rapid and random movement of the eyes, hence the name.

Sleep and Health

When it comes to your mental health sleep is crucial for cognitive function, emotional regulation, and mood stability.

Sleep also plays a vital role in your physical health as it's essential for processes like tissue repair, immune system support, and hormone regulation.

Sleep disorders can have a huge impact on both your physical and mental health if left untreated. Some sleep diorders: Insomnia, Narcolepsy, and Sleep apnea

Tips For Better Sleep

  • Stick to a consistent schedule
  • Limit Screen time before bed
  • Watch your diet
  • Stay active
