Before

You have been assigned a class in the #class-confirmation channel in Discord to take a new class! Yay!!! What to do now? Please, follow these steps:

Before

Now that you know the Sessions Hub, here's what you need to do:

  1. Locate the name of the client and class type.
  2. Check whether this is a new class or a transfer to decide which material to use. Remember to check the material in advance. If you're not sure about the material, please double check with your CTA.
  3. Open the Class Material file and click on the presentation you need to use for the class.
  4. Open the Class tracker file to see the list of learners you are expecting.
  5. Open the Class Attendance file and be ready to add there the email of the users who join your class (if needed).
  6. Open the Student no Show file in case no one shows up and you need to report it.
  7. Access the Zoom room early to set everything up and be ready to welcome your students.

During

  1. Let your students in exactly at the time the class starts.
  2. Greet students warmly as they enter and take a few minutes to build rapport while waiting for everyone to join.
  3. Share the Google slides window on the screen.
  4. Ask them if they completed the corresponding chapter in the LearnApp before class. Reinforce the importance of completing those activities in advance.
  5. Let students know what the goals of the class are and start with the warm up activity.
  6. Move to the pre-task and complete it. You didn't prepare the class material, but you should know it quite well to anticipate the transition to the task and do it in a smooth and natural way.
  7. Move to the task and complete it. Again, you didn't prepare the class material, but you should know it quite well to anticipate the transition to the task and do it in a smooth and natural way.
  8. Remind the students about the next chapter they need to complete in the LearnApp before their next class. Always highlight the importance of the LearnApp work.
  9. Move to the post- task and share the Google Forms. Allow some time for learners to complete it. Then check their answers and provide a grammar explanation for each question whenever you see it necessary.
  10. Wrap up the class by going over the initial objective and help students to self assess their achivement. Remember classe are 55 mins long. You SHOULD NOT exceed that time as it may prevent you to make it on time in case of having back to back classes.

Additional suggestions

  • Encourage Camera Use: Keep your camera on at all times during the class. Invite your students to turn their camera on too, and explain to them why it is important. You can use something like: “We’d love everyone to have their camera on because it increases connection and engagement with each other. It will also help me notice if you need my support when speaking” (Adjust this language to the level of your students).
  • Monitor Your Talk Time: Keep an eye on your talk time (TTT). It shouldn't exceed a 20% of the class. Your students should be doing the most of the talking.
  • Promote Student-Student Interaction: Foster student-student interaction by using Breakout Rooms (BORs) whenever possible. When Ss are working in BORs, it is important to monitor their work but not to interrupt their communication flow with corrections. You can enter the rooms with your camera and mic off, just to take notes of the mistakes you consider relevant to correct. Then, once everyone is back to the main room, give them general feedback. That way, anyone who makes the same mistake can benefit from your explanation. This helps you save time as you do not intervene while they complete the task. Intervene only if you see they're struggling to complete the task or class objectives and help students to self assess their learning.

Additional suggestions

  • Acknowledge New Students: In Premium and Community Classes, ask who is joining for the first time and welcome them. Explain which part of the cycle you’re in (class number) and the topic to be discussed. Remind them they need to complete the topic in the Learn App before joining the class. This will speed up their learning process.
  • Provide Feedback: After each activity, take time to give feedback. For classes with 8 or fewer students, individualize feedback to ensure everyone feels seen and involved. Support shy students to help them gain confidence.
  • Focus on Pronunciation and Vocabulary: Students value feedback on pronunciation and vocabulary. We often receive complaints when these aspects are overlooked. Include plenty of recommendations on vocabulary and direct corrections of mispronunciations in your feedback to improve the quality of their class experience.
  • Monthly Review Request: At the end of the last class each month, encourage students to leave a review in the app. Gathering feedback is crucial for understanding students’ perspectives on the classes and their overall experience.

After

  1. Add your students' email addresses in the Class Attendance file if the class doesn't take place through the TeachApp.
  2. Add the date of the class in the corresponding cell of the class number in the Class Tracker.
  3. Log the class in your Hour tracker for accurate record-keeping.
