origins and characteristics
How did religion influence Indian society?
Unique among major world religions, Hinduism—the faith of about 80 percent of India’s 1.2 billion people—has no founder, not even in legend.
It seems to have evolved among the Aryan tribes that invaded and settled India around 1500 BCE.
Buddhism, too, originated in India, about 1,000 years later. It was based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, called the Buddha, or “the enlightened one,” by his followers.
Buddhism was spread throughout Asia by the Buddha’s missionary followers in the centuries following his death.
Buddhism never took root in India as it has in Japan, Korea, and other cultures, but its precepts inspired one Indian emperor, ?????.

How well a person carries out his or her DHARMA determines their KARMA which in turn determines their status in their next life.
Hindus believe in many gods and goddesses, all of whom are aspects of a single universal god, Brahman. All human souls are a part of Brahman.
Hindus are expected to carry out their DUTIES, or DHARMA. They believe in reincarnation, the idea that the soul is reborn in an endless cycle of life and death.

Buddhism is based on the teachings of the Buddha as he set them forth in the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.
Buddhism was founded by Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha through enlightenment.
Buddhism arose out of Hinduism and shares some of its beliefs and practices. It is a religion in which the idea of God is not important.

The Buddha accepted the Hindu ideas of karma and reincarnation but taught that people can free themselves from rebirth .
People can free themselves from rebirth through meditation and by following the Eightfold Path.
The ideas of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path are based on the Hindu concept of dharma.
The first truth is that life is full of suffering and pain, which includes both physical suffering and emotional suffering.
The second truth is that suffering is caused by people craving or desiring what they do not have.
The Four Noble Truths are four fundamental principles of Buddhism.
The fourth truth is that an Eightfold Path exists, and following this path can end people’s suffering.
The third truth is that people can cease their selfish craving and thus end their suffering.
The Eightfold Path, which is also called the Eightfold Noble Path, is the path to spiritual enlightenment in Buddhism.
Correct speech, which means speaking without malice and telling the truth
Correct intention, which means trying to follow the path and avoiding hatred
Correct view, which means understanding the nature of the world
Correct effort, which means acting unselfishly and staying on the path toward enlightenment
Correct livelihood, which means avoiding careers that harm others
Correct action, which means avoiding evil actions such as killing and stealing
Correct concentration, which mean staying focused on achieving enlightenment
Correct mindfulness, which means being aware of one’s body and feelings
