Adult Learners: 1. need to know why and how the content is relevant to their needs. 2. learn by connecting content to prior life or work-related experiences/knowledge.3. are active participants who seek out their learning. 4. want the content to be relevant and applicable to their professional or personal lives. 5. are task oriented. 6. are intrinsically motivated.
Teaching Strategies
Coaching adult learners:
- act as a facilitator or guide in the learning process rather than a traditional authoritative teacher/instructor.
- keep instruction learner-centered.
- provide opportunities for hands-on experience.
- provide opportunities for discussion and collaboration.
- provide opportunities for problem-solving.
- relate content to real-world situations.
- lessons must be relevant and applicable to the learner's current needs/goals.
- explain how content is relevant and applicable to furthering the learner's professional or personal lives.
Strategies for Engagement
Engage adult learners during instructional coaching by:
- using actual student data and case studies for examples.
- opportunities for learners to observe other classes and instructors.
- modeling instruction with students in front of learners.
- observe learners while they are teaching to provide feedback.
- encourage discussion and sharing of previous experiences and how they relate to the current context.
