Lab practice

Take action: Preserve biodiversity

Find out more about and animal or plant in your area. Make an index card for it, like the one in the picture. Include basic information and photos: - Common name - The kingdom and group it belongs to - A short description - Where it lives - Its life processes - Some interesting facts - The main threats to it - The source or sources you have used to find information.
Deadline: November 10th

It is not a digital presentation. It is only a one-page long document.

Life processes

All living things carry out three life processes: nutrition, sensitivity and reproduction. Nutrition is the process through which living things get raw materials and energy from food. Animals feed on other living things. They can be herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. - Herbivores eat plants. - Carnivores eat other animals. - Omnivores eat both plants and animals. Plants make their own food through photosynthesis using water, mineral salts and carbon dioxide. They use energy from sunlight. Sensitivity is the process through which living things detect and respond to changes in their environment. Animals detect information from their environment through their sense organs and respond with movement. Reproduction is the process through which all living things produce other living things. Sexual reproduction involves two parents. Animals can be oviparous and viviparous. Asexual reproduction involves only one parent and it is more common in plants.

Cells

All living things are made up of cells. Cells are the basic units of life. Living things can be: Multicellular: which are made up of more than one cell, like plants and animals. Unicellular: which are made up of just one cell, like bacteria. Cells also carry out the three life processes: nutrition, sensitivity and reproduction.

Draw an animal cell in your notebook and label its parts. Write the sentences in your notebook and complete with the part of the cell.

Classification of living things: the five kingdoms

Scientists classify all living things into five groups called kingdoms. Living things in the same kingdom share some characteristics.

Levels of organisation

The different types of cells in the multicellular living things work together to carry out specialised functions. These are the levels of organisation.

Cut out the cards and reorganised them into the correct sequence to show how cells are organised.

Animal cells

Animals have many different types of cells: bone cells, muscle cells, brain cells. Each type carries out a different function in the body. They also have irregular shapes.

Plant cells are bigger than animal cells and they have regular shape. They have a rigid wall and special organelles called chloroplasts. They contain chlorophyll to carry out photosynthesis.

Cut and paste the plant cell diagram in your notebook. Then complete it with the name of the parts. Complete the Venn diagram about the animal and plant cell: organelles, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, nucleus, cell wall, cell membrane.
