- Complying with local regulations and environmental laws
- Waste management regulations, import/export laws, and permits regarding various recycling endeavors such as No. 81 of 2012
- Different cities in Indonesia have different rules about waste management. So this is a challenge that must be looked at.
- In collaboration with the government, the IRSI can explore opportunities for incentives such as tax breaks, grants, and subsidies for recycling initiatives. This can boost the feasibility of recycling plants.
- There have been incentives already for plastic waste. For example, the lower of the Value Added Tax from 10% to 5% for recycling businesses.
- IRSI should analyze the demand for recycled materials in Indonesia. By doing this, the locations of possible recycling plants can be determined.
- IRSI should tailor the plant locations based on regional demands. For example, in Jakarta there is a higher demand for recycling plastics in the manufacturing sector. Whereas, in Bali there is a higher demand for recycling single - use plastics as this is tourist attraction.
- This initiative cannot be carried out without labor. Training and educational opportunities must be present for local residents.
- Rural areas are where unemployment is higher for Indonesia. So, this should be taken into consideration when building the plants.
- Developing efficient supply and chain and logistics is important. There needs to be a fixed and working process for the transport for the collection, transport, and processing of recyclable items to recycling plants
- IRSI should consider investing in coastal regions with major ports for efficient transportation.
- In order to build a culture that values recycling, the IRSI must promote recycling through awareness and educational programs.
- Can do this by partnering with local schools, NGOs, and communities to shed light upon the importance of waste reduction and recycling.
- An example of a program is the Pulau Plastik campagin.
