What The Scale of Maps Says About An Area
The difference between Large Scale Maps and Small scale maps:
- Small Scale Maps focus more on one specific area. For example they might show where a tree or park is in a city.
- Large-scale Maps are less specific. They might show where a city is or a body of water is.
Different ways Maps can Represent Information
- We use maps to show us where things are in the world.
- We also use maps to show us data based on where its from.
- Maps can represent information by showing us where to go, like the different highways to take to get to our destination. This is called a road map.
- Maps can also show us landmarks to show us what our surroundings are. These might show us how far away we are.
- Cadastral Charts can show us who owns what.
- Thematic maps can tell us about the weather and voting results.
- Some maps can guide us where not to go, like steep slopes and rivers.
- Sea routes can also be shown.
Types Of Maps
There Are 5 Different Types of Maps
- Reference Maps- These Maps Show us important physical features of an area and are usually political and physical. Some examples are brochures and posters.
- Topographic Maps- Show us elevation and change in physical areas. For example, some show slopes or steep hills.
- Navigation Charts- Show us sea routes. The pink lines show us where ships go.
- Thematic Maps- Gives information about the topic. Some examples are weather maps and population maps, which are used for elections to vote.
- Cadastral Chart- Shows us land ownership and are used for planning city building areas.
