The IRA
Irish Republican Army
By Lukas and Clotilde
The IRA is known for being an anti-imperialist organisations which yearn to preserve the idependancy of the Republic of Ireland from the British Rule. Here are 5 fun facts about this orgnisation:
Summary
The failed abduction
The dog and the explosion
Never trust a rookie !
The IRA is still active !
The IRA and the Nazis
When the IRA was about to make an alliance with the Nazis :
During WW2, some members of the IRA wished to make an alliance with the Nazis. Even if they were ideologically opposed, the reason for this possible alliance with the Germans was that they would potentially give them money and/or firearms as a result. But despite various attempts of creating a functional alliance, it didn't work out because of Ireland neutrality in the war. In the end, all their attempts were stopped by the government.
The IRA and the kidnapping of Gérard Depardieu:
In 1980, Gérard Depardieu, the renowned French actor, was in Dublin in order to shoot the film "My Uncle from America". Everything was going smoothely, but at the time the actor had no idea he was in fact the target of an adbuction attempt. Luckily enough, the IRA mistook Depardieu for a French official and tried to kidnap him for ransom instead, which led to the failure of the kidnapping once the kidnappers noticed their quite important mistake.
The rookie terrorist's mistake:
A young IRA member was tasked with planting a bomb in a British army barracks. However, he made a crucial mistake by receiving the bomb under the bed of an army sergeant who was actually on leave that day. The sergeant discovered the bomb when he returned home and called the authorities, allowing the bomb to be safely defused.
The New IRA is still active in Northern Ireland
Founded in 2021, the New IRA is the new organisation that replaced the Provisional IRA and speculations indicate that this new version is as dangerous as the old one. They have carried out several targeted attacks and assassinations in Northern Ireland, including the murder of Derry-based journalist Lyra McKee in 2019 as well as the murder of police officers and members of the British Army.
The unexpected explosion of an IRA dog:
During an IRA operation in 1970, militants planned to use a dog to carry a bomb into a British army barracks in Northern Ireland. However, their plan took an unexpected turn when the dog became frightened and ran off with the bomb strapped to him. The dog ran through the town, causing panic among residents and IRA activists, who were unable to recover the animal. Fortunately, the bomb was eventually defused without incident, and the dog was found unharmed, although probably very confused.
