What is it?
It is a novel published in 1949. The title, which indicates the year in the future in which the events narrated are set, derives from the inversion of the two final digits of the year in which Orwell began writing the novel.
It is a negative utopia, which pessimistically describes a dark future in which, after a nuclear war, the world is divided into totalitarian powers; England is part of the macro-nation of Oceania, governed by a regime inspired by a radical form of socialism. The novel, published a few years after the end of the Second World War and after another important work by Orwell (Animal Farm, 1945), presents itself as an open criticism of the Stalinist regime.

Summary
The Earth is divided into three huge continents: Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. The citizens of Oceania must submit to the principles of Ingsoc, the dominant ideology in the super state founded on rigid and incontrovertible laws. The supreme commander is Big Brother, a mysterious dictator that no one has ever seen.Winston Smith is an ordinary citizen, resident in London and one of the members of the external party: they are required to wear a numbered blue overall, which distinguishes them from the members of the internal party. He works at the Ministry of Truth, responsible for modifying texts and essays from the past in order to make the promises and projects of the Internal Party true and indisputable. Winston, however, does not share the thoughts of his "comrades" (as the citizens call each other) and decides to write down all his thoughts in a notebook with a critical look at the present regime. In particular, he does not adhere to the doublethink technique, the need to suddenly adapt to the changes imposed by Big Brother, such as moving from one faction to another during a war.

Summary
Winston's life changes definitively when he meets Julia, also a member of the external party, with whom he has a secret relationship.Winston and Julia subsequently become part of the "Brotherhood", a group of rebels aligned against the government, and receive from O'Brien, an important member of the internal party, a book written by the most important of the rebels, Emmanuel Goldstein, who exposes various theories against the regime. Winston and Julia, however, are discovered and captured by the Thought Police who, after having taken them separately to the Ministry of Love, subjects them to a long program of physical and psychological torture. Winston's ordeal in particular is followed by O'Brien himself who turns out to actually be a member of the Thought Police. Winston, however, resists the torture to which he is subjected, managing not to betray Julia. In the last phase of his torture, the poor man is taken to the mysterious room 101 where he must overcome his greatest fear by wearing an iron mask with hungry mice inside. Unable to handle the pressure, Winston betrays Julia and renounces her anti-government sentiments. After a real brainwashing, Smith sides with the Regime. The novel ends with the man looking with admiration at a Big Brother poster, thus making clear the change in his political orientation.

Winston Smith is a 39-year-old man, short and with blond hair, a member of the external party and an employee of the Ministry of Truth. He is the only character in the story besides Julia who opposes the system and takes sides against Big Brother.
He is the dictator of the totalitarian state called Oceania. In the society each individual is constantly monitored by the authorities. The slogan continually reminds the inhabitants of his absolute superiority in the hierarchical pyramid.
Julia gets to know Winston through a note she sent herself with "I love you" written on it. She begins a secret relationship with Winston which is later crushed by O'Brien and the Thought Police who arrest them and take them to the Ministry of Love.

Main characters
O'Brein
Goldstein
He is the negative character of this novel. He is a member of the inner party and therefore enjoys many privileges. He introduces Winston to the revolutionary group of the Brotherhood, however it is he who appears in Winston's cell to torture and brainwash him.
He is the main enemy of the Party that governs Oceania. Due to his opposition to Big Brother, every day starting from 11.00, demonstrations of collective hysteria against him are held in every office and public place: the famous "Two Minutes of Hate".

Main Themes
Goldenstein's book
The ministries
This book represents hope for Winston, a way to be able to overthrow the oppressive government of which they are dominated and to restore freedom of thought, expression and personal independence.
The names of these buildings are paradoxes: the ministry of truth, constantly changes the truth through propaganda; the one of love tortures people and the one of peace is where wars are expected. Furthermore, they are also used to suppress any incidents related to free thought and speech.
Room 101
This room is a particular torture chamber used by officials of the Ministry of Love. The tortures that are inflicted in this room are designed to realize the worst phobias that afflict the prisoner. The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, for example, is afraid of rats, so O'Brien threatens him to have his face torn apart by two large rats, closed in a sort of cage fixed on his head.

Main Themes
Control of information and historical facts
Language control
The new language introduced by the party, namely Newspeak, aims to simplify English by trying it for example from synonyms and antonyms, so as to prevent citizens from formulating structured thoughts. Newspeak is constantly updated with the ultimate aim of preventing any form of thought that could question the absolute power of the party.
The party controls every form of information by rewriting historical events and forbidding citizens from keeping traces of their past. In this way personal memory becomes fragmented and it is easier to believe everything the party says.

Message
05
The message of this novel is that if injustices are not fought, we risk being overwhelmed by unscrupulous people who, through various stratagems (such as eliminating all laws), could take away all rights from citizens.
