There are two types of shoes: soft shoes and hard shoes. Hard shoes are similar to tap shoes, except that they have spikes. Soft shoes, which are called Ghillies, are black shoes with laces. Ghillies are only worn by girls, while boys wear black leather shoes called "roll shoes."

Irish Dancing hit the big time back in 1994, when one small but spectacular interval act during that years Eurovision Song contest suddenly burst on to the stage. A short but rousing Irish dance routine brought the audience to their feet and the phenomenon of Riverdance was born.
