1799 Napoleon Bonaparte named himself Consul and later Emperor of France. In Spain, Carlos IV had given his power to Manuel Godoy. 1807 Treaty of Fontainebleau, it allowed Napoleon's troops to pass through Spain to conquer Portugal.
