PAST SIMPLE

The past simple tense is used for actions or events that are completed and happened at a specific point in the past. -"She went to the store when she realized she was out of milk." (Two RTHseparate actions in the past.) -"He bought a new car because his old one broke down." (Past simple is used to describe the completed actions of buying and breaking down.)

PAST CONTINUOUS

The past continuous tense is used to describe actions or events that were ongoing or in progress at a specific point in the past. "She was reading a book when the phone rang." (Past continuous shows that reading was in progress when the phone rang.) "As I was walking to the park, I saw my friend." (Past continuous emphasizes that walking was ongoing when the sighting occurred.)

As, when or while?

As, when and while are conjunctions. In some uses as, when and while can mean the same, but they can also have slightly different meanings. We use them to introduce subordinate clauses. We can use as, when and while to mean ‘during the time that’, to connect two events happening at the same time: Another coach-load of people arrived as we were leaving.
