Preface
The Guild of Students' purpose is to serve as an executive body that influences and leads the UWI Students by supporting and advocating for student leadership, academic success, diversity, and holistic development. Additionally, at the heart of The Guild of Students council is working on improving the quality of teaching, learning, and student development as evidenced through student voice surveys and other means. The focus of The Guild is to aid UWI in being a world-class global university with roots in the Caribbean.
Overview
The aim of this proposal is to put forth the idea of an Inter-campus Guild Council secretary network which serves to improve the connection between the campuses by utilizing a platform where we can brainstorm and share solutions for campus wide issues. Many of the problems faced on one campus are present across the Caribbean Sea and improved communication is the best method of targeting this affair. Hence, in this digital age by modernizing our approach to problem solving, I believe we can continue to advance our student-centered approach to positively transformation our Caribbean students university experience.
Current Sytem
Moreover, because of the transition to face-to-face learning there are now new issues brought on by the pandemic which the constitution doesn’t address.
Additionally, there is no current means of networking across campus for guild members, particularly the secretaries whose role is vital in assisting all council members. Besides this there is a strained relationship between the guild councils where information is not transcribed from one campus to the other. Adding to this the little to no resources that are shared between the Mona, Cave Hill, St. Augustine, and other campuses restricts our development as student leaders.
In present times, which is a post-pandemic era, we are gaining guidance from an outdated constitution instead of from each other and our predecessors.
Why do we need this ?
- A principal challenge faced is the inability to develop and improve past projects which unfortunately allows all the planning and preparation to diminish once the tenure is completed. It needs to be acknowledged that both students and administrators have commented on a lack of longevity present among The Guild of Students councils.
- We need to locate a method in which both past and present secretaries can communicate across campuses to continue developing student leaders’ plans and to also produce new organizational goals.
Why do we need this ?
- Another chief challenge is independent work doesn’t provide much room for innovations and fast resolutions as working within a team would. Problems like education costs, lack of mental health resources and hall accommodation obstacles are present for UWI students across campuses.
- In addition to these challenges, we are currently limited in our creative space because we do not have a present network that can be utilized to jumpstart largescale intercampus events
Proposed System
An online network where past, incoming, and present secretaries can abet each other and by extension their respective councils which will lead to speedy enactment of operations.
To accomplish this, we would utilize a platform where there will be a free flow of information circulated via the internet which allows for easy and safe conversation.
A shared system offers more accountability and efficiency in the execution of both old and new campaigns
This space can further be utilized for sharing resources that can assist the incoming council as it can be a point of reference because the constitution only provides an overview of the different council positions job.
Continuously, we can learn from past mistakes made by our predecessors and avoid them
OPPORTUNITIES
The implementation of a secretary network allows not only the secretaries but the entire council, who relies on the secretary, the opportunity to take advantage of a plethora of previously unavailable possibilities.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the UWI St. Augustine Guild of Students believe that the implementation of a secretary network is an endeavor that would benefit all parties concerned, by increasing our ability to support each other. As such, we look forward to your support in this matter
