Big Goals for Humanity and the Planet

PROF.SSA EMANUELA PAGLIA

What is AGENDA 2030?

In September 2015, 194 Heads of State from all over the world met at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and launched a set of 17 ambitious goals to achieve over the next 15 years. The plan, called "The 2030 Agenda" aims to stimulate action in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet: eliminate extreme poverty, reduce inequality and protect the planet.

Pillars of AGENDA 2030

At the heart of the 2030 Agenda are five pillars: people, prosperity, planet, partnership, peace also known as the 5Ps. These pillars are interconnected and need to be integrated in practical policy-making and operational activities for improvement, in both developed and developing countries

Responsible consumption and production

Each year, an estimated one third of all food produced - equivalent to 13 billion tons worth around 1 trillion dollars - ends up rotting in the bins of consumers and retailers.

What are the AIMS OF GOAL 12?

The aims of Goal 12 are:- to end hunger, achieve food security and better nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture; - to ensure sustainable consumption and production

Why?

Because- hunger and malnutrition are a barrier to development. We need to improve access to food for everyone; - we need to think about how we produce and consume food so that we use our resources better and reduce waste

Circularity in economy

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

"Our planet is running out of resources. With global consumption expected to double in the next decades and with no sign of global warming decreasing anytime soon, there is an urgent need to manufacture products that are durable, reusable and reparable. Boosting circularity will help the environment, but will also be pivotal to the post Covid-19 economic recovery"

The present global situation implies the decay of the linear economy (the "take-make-consume-throw away") in favour of new economic patterns capable of reducing waste to a minimum. In the circular economy model, products are not thrown away: they are shared, leased, reused, repaired, refurbished and recycled. Circularity is an essential part of a wider transformation of industry towards climate-neutrality and long-term competitiveness. It can deliver substantial material savings throughout value chains and production processes, generate extra value and unlock economic opportunities.

EUROPEBOOSTING CIRCULARITY IN THE EU As part of the European Green Deal the European Commission has been working for years towards a circular economy action plan in order to promote eco-innovation and resource efficiency. The plan includes legislative proposals on waste, reuse and recycling to be met by 2030. The Eu has established a set of sustainability principles to be followed: - improving product durability, reusability, upgradability and reparability; - increasing recycled content in products while ensuring their performance and safety

WORKJOB CREATION Circularity can be expected to have a positive net effect on job creation provided that workers acquire the skills required by green transition. The potential of the social economy which is a pioneer in job creation linked to the circular economy, will be further leveraged by the mutual benefits of supporting the green transition and strengthening social inclusion.

THE EUROPEAN GREEN DEAL

Climate change and environmental degradation are an existential threat to Europe and the world. To overcome these challenges, Europe needs a new growth strategy that will transform the Union into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy

The European Green Deal is a set of measures for making Europe climate neutral by 2050. These initiatives range from cutting greenhouse-gas emissions to investing in research and innovation and to preserving Europe's natural environment.
