Geography is the study of Earth's physical and human features. use themes, or ideas, in their work. These geography themes can be applied to nearly everything that geographers study. Can you use the 5 themes of geography to find your way back to civilization?

You and your fellow classmates are on the beautiful Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania. You try to cross a stream but lose your footing. You are swept down stream along with your gear. When you make it to shore, you are unhurt but far from the trail . Luckily, your gear also washed up. Collect your gear by exploring the 5 Themes of Geography and answering questions. Theme #1: Location

Where are we?
We can think about location in two ways.
Relative location: a location can be described in relation to another place. You can use directional words such as cardinal directions. You can also identify landmarks or the distances between places to describe relative location. Ex. Harrisburg is west of Philadelphia.
Absolute location: a location can be described specifically by using coordinates on a map. You describe an absolute location using lines of longitude and latitude. Ex. 42o N and 36o W

What does an area have in common?
Region describes an area that has one or more common characteristics.
Regions can also be based on human characteritics.
Regions can be physical (nature). Examples: regions based on landforms, climate, vegetation, wildlife, soil,etc.
Examples: political boundaries, cultural regions( religions, languages, foods, and more), economic regions, etc.
