Let's REVISE
Past perfect: meaning and use
When we're talking about two events in the past, we use the past perfect to say which happened first.
FORM
We build the past perfect tense with a subject + had/hadn't + past participle
POSITIVE
When my parents got to the station, they realised they had left the tickets at home.
NEGATIVE
Kerry couldn’t leave work on time because she hadn't written the report.
QUESTION
Had you finished your homework before the movie started?
thank you
1. Mary had given me Tony's address before she left. 2. When the boys arrived at the cinema, the film had already started. 3. Before we reached the station we saw that we had lost our way. 4. All the tickets had been sold before the concert began. 5.They took a shower after they had finished the game. 6. I asked Mr. Green how many books he had read.
A In this case we have: 1) she didn't complete her report, 2) the clock struck 5pm. The negative past perfect form "hadn't completed" tells us which was the first event in time (in this case the completing of the report was something that didn't happen). She probably completed the report after 5pm!
1. The sun shone yesterday after it had been cold for many weeks. 2. Uncle David went to the doctor after he had been ill for a month. 3. Before the police caught the thief, he had stolen two more watches. 4. Mum once painted a picture although she had never learnt it.
