- Its original name was Pameje, of Mazahua origin, which changed during the first years of the Colony when it received the title of San Francisco del Valle de Temascaltepec, so that years later, during the second half of the 19th century, it adopted the simple name with which we now know in honor of General Nicolás Bravo.​​​
