Interactive Image - What causes the seasons?

Explain the change in the Northern Hemisphere from June to December.

It is summer in June in the Northern Hemesphere because the Sun´s rays hit that part of Earth more directly than at any other time of the year. It is winter in December in the Northern Hemesphere, because that is the South Pole´s turn to be tilted toward the Sun.

Why is Earth´s axis tilted?

Earth´s axis is tilted because when Earth was young, it is though that something big hit it and knocked it off-kilter. So instead of rotating with its axis straight up and down, it leans over a little bit.

Compare solstice and equinox.

A solstice is an event in wich a planet´s poles are most extremely inclined toward or away from the star it orbits. A equinox is when Earth´s axis is tilted neither towards or away from the Sun only two times a year, resulting in equal daylight and darkness at all latitudes.

What is Earth´s axis and how is it related to the seasons?

Earth´s axis is an imaginary pole going right through the center of the Earth from "top" to "bottom". It is related to the seasons because its axis doesnt stand straight, and that causes Earth to have seasons

Why are there periods where there is more light and the temperature shifts?

There are period where temperature shifts and there is more light because of Earth´s rotation and its tilted axis during certain parts of the year.

Summarize each season.

Summer is the warmest, Winter is the coldest, and Spring and Autum lie in between.
