After answering the initial questions you will have realized that our senses often mislead us, and that it is only possible to answer with certainty if we make measurements or checks on the proposed figures.
Activity 1: Consider the following properties or attributes of a table: touch, shine, length, width, height, weight, smell, shape, volume, comfort.
What are the magnitudes?
Activity 2: Indicate the units that can be read in the brochure and relate them to their magnitudes.
FLIGHT INFORMATION All flights are allowed to carry a maximum of 56 cm long, 25 cm wide and 40 cm high and 15 kg of hand baggage. In addition, containers of more than 100 mL filled with liquid will not be accepted in carry-on baggage. If any bag exceeds the established limits, it will not be accepted in the cabin and will have to be checked in.The scheduled departure time of your flight is 9 am and the arrival time is 11 am local time. The average cruising speed will be 270 km/h and the maximum altitude will be 12 000 m. COVID restrictions: All passengers must wear a mask of at least 324 cm2 in area. In addition, before boarding, they must pass through the sanitary control and check that their body temperature is below 37ºC.
Activity 3: write the following quantities in scientific notation a) 0,000 005 g b) 0,000 052 g c) 2 000 000 m d) 25 000 000 m e) 3 010 000 s f) 0,000 205 A
Activity 4: indicate which multiplo or submultiplo you would use in the following cases: distance between students, mass of a person, size of a pencil, height of an insect.
Units squared
Units cubed
Activity 5: perform the following unit changes, using conversion factors: a) 1200 m a Km b) 2600 cg a dag c) 2,5 hm2 a cm2 d) 2520 s a min e) 34000 mm a dam f) 9200 cl a L g) 500 dm3 a cm3 h) 1,2 h a s i) 6,23 hm a mm
Activity 2.6: perform the following unit changes, using conversion factors:
2.3. Scientific notation
It is the way to write a number using 10 to the power of one exponent. The number must not start with 0 and must have a decimal as the second digit. Example: 2,54*10X correct: 2540 = 2,54*103 incorrect: 2540 = 0,254*104 To convert a number to scientific notation, count the number of places the decimal point is shifted. X is the number of places.

2.6. Capacity and volume
VOLUME: Space occupied by a body -- Measured in m3 CAPACITY: Volume inside a container -- Measured in m3 and expressed in liters (L)
1 kL = 1 dm3
1 L = 1 dm3
1 mL = 1 cm3
2.2 Types of magnitudes
Two types of quantities: Fundamental quantities: They do not depend on any other quantity. There are 7. Derived quantities: Obtained from base quantities or from other derived quantities.
2.5 Conversion factors
It consists of the sequential application of conversion factors, expressed as fractions and arranged in such a way that any dimensional unit appearing in both the numerator and denominator of any of the fractions can be cancelled out, until only the desired set of dimensional units is obtained.

TWe have to make MEASURES to conduct our experiments. To MEASURE is to associate to a MAGNITUDE a UNIT. Thus to measure a distance, means to establish the number of times that the unit of length is contained in that distance. Measurements can be expressed as follows: 14 m MAGNITUDE: is anything which can be measured. Examples: Mass, time, temperature, length, force, pressure… Not measurables: Beauty, goodness, happiness… UNIT: amount of the attribute or magnitude that we take as a reference. Examples: Length: feet, meter, yard, light-year… IMPORTANT: MAGNITUDE is not the same as UNIT.
