The verb "To be"
Possessive adjectives and subject pronouns
- The present simple of the verb to be has three forms
- I am
- We/You/They are
- He/She/It is
- They = plural form // people or things
- We always need the subject before the verb
- You are very nice
- Contractions or short forms
- You're very nice
- We use this verb to talk about facts, such as:
- Introducing people
- Age
- Job
- Nationality
- Feelings
- Colour
- Prices
- Weather
- Time
- Descriptions
- Use of Subject Pronouns:
- Subject + verb
- Use of Possessive adjectives:
- Possessive adjectives + noun
- PA are always used in singular form
- These are their suitcases.
- This/These= here
- This = singular form
- These = plural form
- That/Those= there

- Used with or without a noun
- This + verb to be = to introduce people on the phone

Transcription WAITRESS: Fine. And you, sir? DEREK: Mm… I'd like the tomato and bean salad to start, please. WAITRESS: Sure, and for your main course? DEREK: Er… The bacon burger, please. Can I have it without cheese? WAITRESS: No cheese. Sure. And what would you like to drink?
Transcription SALLY: A beer for me, please. DEREK: Really? You usually have wine! SALLY: That's true! But I don't want that today. DEREK: Mm... I'll have a beer too. And could we have some water too? WAITRESS: Sure. I'll bring your drinks in a moment.
Transcription WAITRESS: No problem. And have you decided? SALLY: Well, I had orange cheesecake last time I was here, so I'll have the white chocolate cake this time. WAITRESS: Great. I'll bring them for you soon.
