Identify

U.S Coins

Objective

1. Hand out quarter, dime, nickel and penny to students and have them take a look at them and guess among their groups the currency of each coin 2. Watch a small video song that talks about U.S coins and their currency

Direct instruction

1. Show the penny to students and describe to them how it looks like and the curreny of it (The penny is a brownish gold color and it's the only coin that is this color and this is worth one cent) (Ask a student to tell me how much a penny is worth, Ask another student one way they can identify a penny) 2. Show the nickel to students and tell them the currency of it (This is a nickel, have all students repeat with me) (This nickel is worth 5 cents, can you say 5 cents with me) 3. Show the Dime to students and tell them the currency of it (This is a dime its very small like the penny) (This dime is worth 1o cents) 4. Show the Quarter and tell them the currency of it (This is a Quarter and its worth 25 cents and it's biggest than the rest of the coins)

Guided Practide

Learning centers

  1. Coin Sorting mat where students have coins and put them in the correct spot of the mat
  2. Money value task cards where each card shows a coin and student circles the value of the coin
  3. Color the coin according to the value worksheet
  4. Money puzzles, student identify coins by matching them with the heads and tails side, as well as with the coin names and money amounts

Closing

End with a brainpop video and quiz as a class
