Hispanic Heritage month is celebrated in the United States each year between the dates September 15 - October 15.

Who created Hispanic Heritage Month?

President Lyndon Johnson first designated Hispanic Heritage week in 1968. President Ronald Reagan later expanded the week to a full month in 1988.

What is Hispanic Heritage Month?

Hispanic Heritage month is a special time dedicated to recognizing the culture, achievements, and contributions made by Hispanic and Latin Americans.

“Hispanic” or “Latino”

Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish or are descended from Spanish-speaking populations, while Latino refers to people who are from or descended from people from Latin languge root.

Where is Latin America?

Latin America is understood to consist of the entire continent of South America in addition to Mexico, Central America, and the islands of the Caribbean whose inhabitants speak Spanish.

How do we celebrate Hispanic Heritage?

We can celebrate Hispanic Heritage by going to community festivals and events. Students in school can study more about Hispanic culture by learning about Hispanic cuisines, music, fashion, religion, and famous Hispanic Americans.
