The Education Sector
Introduction
During the first two sessions, we discussed the nature and definition of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs. In brief, we saw that in both the entrepreneurship concept, as well as those individuals who practice the concept, that the foundations include people who are visionaries and risk takers. These practitioners can see beyond the organizational and environmental constraints of their economic sector and or their organization and conceive of new ways to get things done. In other words, all entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs need to understand what is going on and what is needed within the economic sector in which they practice.

As entrepreneurs, education leaders must not only understand their economic sector; they should also have a vision and a plan for the future.
Conflict between the federal, state and local governments over responsibilities.
Political challenges to education institutions and bureaucracies from advocates of markets and choice.
In their introduction to the Handbook of Education Politics and Policy, Cooper et al. (2015) summarize t he future state of education as including the following challenges:
Mobilization for more equity and opportunity in education and debates over testing and teacher evaluations.
Growth of special interest groups in education.

Baird & Lautzenheiser (2016) suggest that in order for entrepreneurs to succeed in today's education world, that they should undertake the following strategies:
Tackle big education issues like the achievement gap in order to be accepted by the traditionalist in education.
Make sure that for-profit higher education enterprises focus on access more than just profits.
Solve real problems of existing systems and institutions.
Integrate and build partnerships.
Make the education community feel part of what you are doing.

Because there are so many strategies and challenges to being an entrepreneur in the education sector, during this session, students will spend their time researching and studying the various components and opportunities of the modern education sector.

Here are just a few highlights of the sector that may surprise you:
There are now 6000 charter schools in the United States.
Community colleges enroll 44% of all undergraduates. (Note: Community colleges, which can expose you to all kinds of entrepreneurial opportunities in education, are an understudied area.)
In recent years, nearly $8 billion in federal student aid went to for-profit colleges.
More than 18,000 local education agencies now exist in this country.

There are 50 million students in public elementary and secondary schools in this country today.
There are 33,000 private elementary and secondary schools exist in this country today.
K-12 is an $85 billion component of the American economy.
For-profit education is a $100 billion dollar industry.
Educational entrepreneurs in the 21st century must be prepared to deal with these challenges and a good deal more.

During the first two sessions, we discussed the nature and definition of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs.
