La historia del tenis moderno se remonta a 1874, cuando el comandante Walter Colpton Wingfield, considerado el inventor del tenis, patentó un nuevo juego: el sphairistiké (del griego, «arte de la pelota»), que posteriormente recibió el nombre de lawn tennis (tenis sobre hierba).
