Corals and moon

Typically a few day before full moon, nearly every coral on a reef begins to spew plumes of eggs and sperm into the water column. Corals have the ability to sense how much moonlight is hitting the surface of water.

Last quarter

Also called waxing quarter

A week after Full Moon, the Moon reaches its Last Quarter. In this phase, the Moon is in quadrature (elongation = 270o, position G in the diagram below), and one half of the Moon’s disk is illuminated as seen from Earth. The Last Quarter Moon rises at midnight, transits the meridian at sunrise and sets at noon.

First Quarter

Also named Waning quarter

This phase happen once a month,it´s called first quarter because its completed 1/4 of its orbit.the Earth, Moon, and Sun are at a right angle instead of a straight line, and the Moon and Sun pull in different directions, the First Quarter phase has the smallest effect on the ocean’s tides.

The moon and the sea

When the moon is full or new, the ocean experiences a stronger pull, resulting in more pronounced tides. When the moon is half full, the ocean experiences a weaker pull, resulting in less tidal fluctuation.

The moon and the marine life

The moon’s effect on the tides definitely plays a major role in the lives of ocean animals. As the moon waxes and wanes throughout the course of the lunar month, the amount of moonlight over the ocean can have unexpected and fascinating impacts on ocean animal behavior. Feeding, communication, mating, and spawning events linked to moon phases are some of the most remarkable happenings of the underwater world.

Full moon

The full moon happens when the sun iluminates the entire moon. There is 12 hours difference between the sun and the moon rises, astronomers regard the moon as full at a precisely defined instant, when the moon is exactly 180 degrees opposite the sun in ecliptic longitude.

New Moon

Consectetur adipiscing elit

New moon its the first phase of the cycle The reason this phase is called the New Moon is that it is the first phase in the lunar cycle, and marks a “new” cycle of phases. The alignment of the Earth, Moon, and Sun leaves the side of the Moon facing Earth in total darkness to our view, as the Moon does not produce its own light.

Baby fish and the moon

In the open ocean the moonlight helps the baby fishes to grown. With predators like lantern fish shying away from bright moonlight to avoid their own predators, baby fish are able to focus solely on eating as much as they can– resulting in faster growth.
