Tues Water and Change How much of Earth’s surface is covered by land Which areas are covered by land, and which are covered by water? How can you recognize water on a map ? How can you recognize land Water Water Water (google slide) Wed Fill a clear glass with as much water as it will hold before spilling. Then ask the students “How many pennies can this glass hold before any water runs down the side?” TSW give their answers try it! Students will be surprised to see just how many pennies the glass can hold. Close up they will be able to observe a dome of water forming at the top of the glass. TTW ask “How do you think this is possible?” We will find out during the explore activity when we read the book I Get Wet by Vicki Cobb

Thurs Water and Change we see water all over. We see land next to water. What is the land like near water? What land have you seen near water? After reading I Get Wet (Stopping to try the activities suggested), ask the students what the book said about why ducks don’t get wet. (A duck’s feathers are coated with a kind of grease, and water doesn’t wet grease) Then give each pair of students a sterile, dry feather (Available at craft stores) and a small container of water. Have them predict what the feather will look like after it has been dipped in water. Try it! Next Give each pair another clean, dry feather and have them cover it lightly with petroleum jelly (crisco also works) to simulate how a duck covers its feathers with grease. Have them predict what the feather will look like after it has been dipped in water. Try it! Students will discover that the clean feather gets wet, but the greased feather does not absorb much water. (feather, petroleum jelly (crisco also works) Fri Protecting Land and Water Some people work to save water and land. Example park ranger. How do they protect water? Water can be helpful and destructful. schoology Water 1 wk 16
