IFCN Chatbots on WhatsApp

Description: WhatsApp partners with various organizations of the International Fact-Checking Network to provide a chat-based fact-checking service. Users can send information and claims that they encounter online or offline to one of the participating fact-checking organizations, preferably from the country where the information originated. This process works via an automated chatbot. If the bot recognizes a topic on which the organization has published fact-checking articles, it will automatically send the corresponding articles. If not, the organization will check the query manually and send a matching fact-checking article, if there are any, at a later time. Users also have the option to subscribe to regular fact-checking newsletters or get a list of the latest fact-checking article by the organisation.

• If chatbot does not immediately recognize that there are existing fact-check articles on a subject, results will be sent manually by organizations’ team and can take some time.
• Each organisation must be messaged individually, there is no option to send a query to multiple organisations.

Context of use: The IFCN Chatbots can be used whenever users encounter suspicious information online or offline. Depending on the organisation, possible chatbot input can include written questions and topic, pictures, videos, links and voice messages. This allows users to forward questionable articles, videos or pictures that they received via messenger or found on social media or other websites directly to a fact-checking organization.

How to use: 2. Message your chosen organisation on WhatsApp. A simple "Hi" is sufficient to start the automated chat. 3. The automated chat will differ a little by organization. Most chatbots will send you a menu, where you can select between different options, such as "Check claim", "Most recent fact-checks", "Subscribe to fact-check newsletter", "About this chatbot".

If it doesn’t recognize the topic, you will get a message saying the organization will text you back once they find a matching article or once they write a new article on the topic.

Context of use: Google Fact Check Explorer can be used in users’ daily lives, since it’s easy to use and produces quick results. Awareness for fact-check ratings in Google Search can be helpful to find cct-checking information when users are not actively looking for verification. Due to its immediate results, Google Fact Check Explorer can also be used in a classroom setting, e.g. where students are tasked with checking various claims and finding out about their origins.

The ConspiracyChecker was created as part of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation's project debunk - countering conspiracy-theory antisemitism. After answering all the questions a barometer shows how likely the narrative/claim is to be nonsense or true.

These reports and the overall game experience as well as what students learned (e.g. what makes a source credible? How to decide whether a piece of information is relevant or not) can be discussed as a group.

For each piece of information, you will have to decide whether it’s relevant for your research question or not. Description: No More Haters is a project by two non-profit organisations supported by Google.org that researches the impact of hate speech and disinformation and provides three game modes aiming to educate young people on these issues. In the Game Mode "Quizzz", users are asked to analyse situations of hate speech and disinformation and find an adequate way of responding. In "True or false", players must decide whether a claim is true or false. In "Hate Wheel", players must find terms that describe different aspects of hate speech. The application is accessible via browser everywhere or as an Android and iOS app (only available when located in Spain).

For other browsers it has a monthly subscription fee.

• Only free to use on Microsoft Edge.
• Only works for major news websites in the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Germany, Austria. and Italy; sometimes it won’t have any information on smaller blogs and websites.
• Does not help to distinguish which information is false, only gives an idea whether a source is trustworthy.

Strengths:

• Very transparent on its ratings and how they are created.
• Provides both a short evaluation and score for quick use, as well as very detailed information on its score based on credibility, transparency and history.
• Reports on how often a site is proven to have published false information.
• Helpful for everyday use to get fast information on a source when coming across articles in search results or social media feeds.
• Shows a website’s political leaning if it has any.
• By engaging with the detailed background information, users can develop an understanding on a broader level what makes news sources credible.

Context of use: NewsGuard is mainly helpful in everyday use when coming across news articles in search engines or social media feeds. However, it can also be incorporated in classroom or workshop activities. How to use: 1. Go to https://zinc.cse.buffalo.edu/ubmdfl/deep-o-meter 2. Create a free account, verify your e-mail-address and log-in 3. Upload a file (image, video or audio) by clicking on the box on the left 4. Depending on your file type, the tool will give you a couple of detector models to choose from. Hovering over a model will show you a short description. You can sort by Alphabet, Year, Performance or Running Time. Choose a detector by clicking on it. 5. Below the submit button, you can choose whether to share data with the University at Buffalo or not. Click “Submit”.

Especially with English texts, GPTZero can give you an idea whether or not a text was written by a human. With regards to disinformation, any AI detection tool will not help with evaluating the truthfulness of the content, of course. However, it can be helpful to be aware of AI generated content, since AI can be used to generate disinformation at scale. GPTZero can be used in a workshop or classroom setting. Participants/students can create their own AI-generated content and check their creations with the AI Detector. They can test out how editing the text themselves changes the rating. GPTZero can be helpful for highlighting the current status of AI-recognition: There are quite reliable options for English, but not for other languages.
