Past Tenses

WE USE DIFFERENT PAST TENSES WHEN NARRATING STORIES IN ENGLISH

IWe are going to review the following tenses: PAST SIMPLE PAST CONTINUOUS PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS PAST PERFECT SIMPLE PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS FUTURE ACTIVITIES IN THE PAST PRESENT AND PAST HABITS

PAST SIMPLE

We use PAST SIMPLE in stories to describe the main events in a sequence. One event after another.

HE GOT IN THE CAR, STARTED THE ENGINE AND DROVE AWAY

Also to describe a general state in the PAST

IT WAS ONE OF THE COLDEST WINTERS IN MY MEMORY

  • Refers to verbs which do not involve an action but a state. BE /HAVE/KNOW / LIKE /LOVE /BELIEVE ...
  • STATIVE VERBS: Refer to STATES, EMOTIONS, POSSESIONS or FEELINGS

PAST CONTINUOUS

To talk about activities in progress at a moment in the past

THAT DAY, SHE WAS SLEEPING IN THE AFTERNOON

Describe scenes in a story or description

WHEN SHE ARRIVED AT THE BEACH, THE SUN WAS SHINING AND THE WAVES WERE CRASHING INTO THE SHORE

To talk about an activity in progress when another activity happened or interrupted it

WHEN HE CALLED I WAS COOKING DINNER

PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE

1.To talk about life experiences not mentioning the exact time when it ocurred

I HAVE VISITED PARIS

2. Recent event which have a result in the present

3. Actions/ Situations which began in the past but continue int he present

4. Actions finished recently

1. For a single activity that began at a moment in the past and is still continuing

2. To talk about repeated activities which started at a particular time in the past and are still continuing up.

I HAVE BEEN GOING TO SPAIN IN HOLIDAY EVERY YEAR SINCE 2000.

PAST PERFECT SIMPLE

To talk about actions that happened before other actions in the past

AFTER SOPHIE HAD FINISHED HER WORK, SHE WENT TO HAVE LUNCH

I WASHED THE FLOOR WHEN THE PAINTER HAD GONE

I DIDN´T SAY ANYTHING UNTIL SHE HAD FINISHED TALKING

HE HAD WRITTEN THREE BOOKS AND HE WAS WORKING ON ANOTHER ONE

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

To talk about actions that happened before another action in the past

I WAS TIRED BECAUSE I HAD BEEN RUNNING FOR HOURS.

HE GAVE A GOOD CONCERT. HE HAD BEEN PRACTISING ALL AFTERNOON
