DATA COLLECTION
Data can be collected in a variety of ways. One of the most common methods is through the use of surveys. Three of the most common methods are the cellphone survey, the mailed questionnaire, and the personal interview.
METHODS OF SAMPLING
To obtain samples that are unbiased—i.e., that give each subject in the population an equally likely chance of being selected—statisticians use four basic methods of sampling: random, systematic, stratified, and cluster sampling.
RANDOM SAMPLING
Random samples are selected by using chance methods. An example is to number each subject in the population. Then place numbered cards in a bowl, mix them thoroughly, and select as many cards as needed which consitutes the sample.
SYSTEMATIC SAMPLE
In systematic samples you number each subject of the population and then select every kth subject by a regular interval from the starting number which is randomly selected.
STRATIFIED SAMPLING
Stratified samples consists in dividing the population into groups (called strata) according to some characteristic that is important to the study, then sampling from each group. Samples within the strata should be randomly selected.
CLUSTER SAMPLING
The population is divided into groups called clusters by some means such as geographic area or schools. Then randomly selects some of these clusters and uses all members of the selected clusters as the subjects of the samples.
ACTIVITY 5
Set up a plan and conduct a survey on any kind of situation you are interested so that you can answer the following: a) What is the purpose of your research problem?b) What type of survey did you use (social media, mail, or interview)?c) What types of scores did you use? Why? (Nominal, ordinal, internal, or ratio)d) Which of the Sampling´s Methods did you use?e) Why did you choose that method?f) If you were to choose another sampling method, explain which method would you pick and how it will affect the research problem?g) What is the conclusion of the survey?
