- Have you seen a sea turtle before?
- Where does a sea turtle live?
Meet the dog who can find rare sea turtle nests at a shocking success rate
Article from: National Geographic
-Dory identified 560 turtles (three species) -compared to the Wildlife Conservation Comission finding 256
Dory's Findings
supplement
-Dory is the first dog to prove that in most circumstances, dogs can outperform humans in sea-turtle monitoring -can be helpful for quick data
This research has a huge impact on conservation efforts and scientific discovery
Conservation
- Pepe Peruyero selected a rescue dog named "Dory"
- Trained to find scent of turtle shells
Training
Benefits Of Experiment
-These findings can help scientists understand sea turtles habitats and promote sea life conservation

Science Standards Connection
K-ESS3.1- Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants and animals (including humans) and the places they live
Idea #1 with Kindergarten
- Read "One Tiny Turtle" by Nicola Davies
- This story shows pictures of the ocean and and talks about what turtles are.
- The story also talks about baby turtle shells which connects back to my news.
- Since the story really focuses on the physical features of turtles I would create a KWL chart with my students.
- I would ask them what they know about turtles before and after the read aloud/ want to know
By: Nicola Davies
Idea #2 with Kindergarten
Turtle Habitat Observing & Journal- Partner Share Out/ Whole Class
- Students would observe the turtle habitat replica in the classroom
- I would have students take notes in their science notebook/ make drawings about what they see
- Students would share with a partner about what they saw and show each other their findings
- As a class we would talk about the habitat and what the turtle lives in
