Dilations are changing everything!

Dilation is a transformations that does change the size of the image. Shapes are dilated around a point by the scale factor. The scale factor will tell how much the shape will change by. (Multiply by the scale factor) Dilations are the result of SIMILAR FIGURES. Similar figures have corresponding angles and proportional side lengths

Dilations are changing everything!

A dilation changes the size of a figure. The center of dilation is the starting point from which you measure distances in a dilation. The original figure and image are SIMILAR after a dilation.

Scale Factors are changing the overall sizes!

Scale factor changes the size of the figure. If the scale factor is greater than 1 the figure gets bigger. If the scale factor is less than 1 the figure gets smaller.

**Multiply by the scale factor**

Similar Figures! When things are the same, yet different!

Similar figures are the result of a dilation. Similar triangles will have AT LEAST two congruent angles and proportional side lengths. Similar figures will be the same shape, but no always the same size. The pumpkins are similar!

Slope "slow" your roll!

Slope represents the ratio of the vertical change to the horiztonal change. The Pumpkin Rolling Competition took place on a hill pictured to the graph on the right. Look at the steepness (slope) of the hill.

Dilations, Similarity, and Slopes have been sited!!

Dilations in technology! Have you ever dilated an image? I do it all the time. If you are creating something and copy an image from Pixabay. You can use the diagonal arrow in the corner to make your image BIGGER or SMALLER. This is a dilation and it creates similar pictures! Challenge!! Think of another way you use dilation!

Slope in real life! One way that understanding slope is used in the real world is when building a handicap ramp. ADA recommends a 1"12 slope ratio when building a ramp. This means that for every inch of rise (vertical) you need 1 foot of ramp. Challenge!! Think of some other ways slope could be used in real life!
