Nutrients
Nutrients are the substances our body needs to survive, to grow and to repairitself. Nutrients also give us energy. We can find the main nutrients our body needs in food. Those nutrients can be classified as:
3.1.
Energy producing food
- Carbohydrates give us energy, but less energy than fats. There are two types of carbohydrates: sweet carbohydrates and non-sweet carbohydrates.
o Sweet carbohydrates: they contain sugar like jams, honey or biscuits o Non-sweet carbohydrates: bread, pasta, rice, potatoes...
- Fats also give us energy, but we must eat them sparsely because they can cause problems in the circulatory system. We get some fats, such as butter, from animals, and some others, such as olive oil, from plants.
3.2.
Body- building food
Proteins help our body to grow and to repair itself. Proteins can be divided into three different categories: o Vegetal origin: lentils, beans...o Animal Origin: eggs, fish, meat...o Dairy products: yogurt, milk, cheese...
3.3.
Body-regulating food
Vitamins and minerals are essential for our bodies to function well and to be healthy. They protect as from illnesses. Fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals, but we can also find them in other types of food.
Did you know that...
Apart from those types of nutrients, there is something quite important: FIBRES. Fibres can be found in several types of food, and they help our digestive system because thanks to them, food is constantly moving through the digestive system. We can find fibres in fruits, vegetables, cereals, biscuits...
Things to bear in mind...
- The amount of drink and food that someone normally gets over a period is called “diet”.
- A diet must be varied and balanced, taking nutrients from all the groups but always in the right amount.
- Apart from having a balanced and a varied diet, it is quite important to do sport and to drink water because remember that most of our body is made up of water.

Food to prevent ilnesses
Hippocrates was one of the most important figures in the history of medicine because he laid the foundation for modern medical practices. Hippocrates is often called the "Father of Medicine" because he introduced the idea that diseases had natural causes. He emphasised the importance of careful observation and recording of symptoms. Hippocrates believed in the importance of diet in maintaining good health. He recognized the connection between the food people consumed and their well-being. He recommended a balanced diet and moderation in eating as essential for good health.Hippocrates supported an integrated approach to medicine, considering not only the physical aspects of health but also mental and emotional well-being. This included factors like exercise, sleep, and a healthy diet as essential for overall health.

Healthy eating prevents obesity, which is a risk factor for many diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, and heart disease. Additionally, healthy eating can improve mood. When you're happy, you are more likely to be active, and it also boosts 'good' cholesterol while decreasing 'bad' cholesterol. The more healthy foods you consume, the better your 'good' cholesterol levels will be, further helping to prevent disease.
