Rules of use of “a” / “an”, “some”, “any”, “ “many”, “much” “a lot of”, “lots of”

We use a or an to talk about singular nouns we can count (Countable nouns)

Usamos a o an para hablar de sustantivos en singular que podemos contar.

an apple

e.g.

a book

Las palabras "a" y "an" son artículos que significan "un" o "una" en castellano. Se usa "an" cuando la palabra que sigue empieza con un sonido de vocal (vowel), y se usa "a" cuando la palabra que sigue empieza con un sonido de consonante (consonant). Hay palabras que empiezan con una consonante pero el primer sonido de la palabra es un sonido vocal: an hour (No se pronuncia la "h" en esta palabra).

We use some/many/a lot of/lots of for plural nouns we can count in AFFIRMATIVE (+) sentences

Usamos some (algunos/as; unos/as); many (muchos/as); a lot of(muchos) lots of (un montón) para sustantivos en plural que podemos contar.

some seeds

some cherries

• We also use SOME/A LOT OF/LOTS OF for nouns we can’t count (Uncountable) and which haven’t got plural forms in AFFIRMATIVE (+)sentences.

También usamos some (algun/o/a/s)/a lot of/lots of para sustantivos que no podemos contar y que no tienen formas en plural.

some smoke

some fruit

e.g.

some food

We use ANY in negative (-) sentences and questions(?) with Countable and Uncountable nouns

Usamos ANY en oraciones negativas (ninguno/a/s) y preguntas (algun/o/a/s)

e.g.

There aren't any headphones. Are there any headphones?

COUNTABLE

There isn't any millk. Is there any milk?
