SOCIOCENTRISM & ETHNOCENTRISM

Miguel Hernández Texis

Ethnocentric people think the ways they do things is the way things should be done, and every other culture's way of doing things is unsavory or undesirable.

Leading to biased thinking and judgments. It involves perceiving the world primarly from the perspective of one´s own social group and evaluating others based on that perspective

ETHNOCENTRISM

SOCIOCENTRISM

Refers to the tendency of individuals or groups to view their own social group or culture as superior or central

Is the belief that your culture is natural and correct while other people´s cultures are incorrect, unnatural, or ingerior

Differences

Is largely a matter of scale; in contrast to sociocentrism, which is usually related to class and group differences (and prejudices) within a concrete country or ‘society’ (though some use the term also to refer to a perspective biased by ‘national’ peculiarities and ideologies), ethnocentrism (especially in the form of Eurocentrism) is commonly related to prejudices at an intercontinental/hemispheric level.

How changes occur in everiday life

1. Stereotyping: People may make generalizations about other social or ethnic groups based on their own perspective 2. Biased judgments: can influence how individuals perceive and evaluate others. 3. Cultural misunderstandings: can contribute to miscommunication and misunderstandings between different cultures or social groups. 4. In-group favoritism: Often leads to a bias towards one's own social group. 5. Conflict and discrimination:Can fuel intergroup conflicts and discrimination. When people believe their own group is superior, they may engage in discriminatory actions It's important to recognize these biases and actively work towards promoting understanding, empathy, and inclusivity across different cultures and social groups.
